KELLY, KEITH A. AND RICHARD C. LA FORCE. Pacing the canine stomach with electric stimulation. Am. J. Physiol. 222(3) : 588-594. 1972.-Certain aspects of gastric electric activity in six conscious dogs were controlled by electric stimulation from encircling and point gastric electrodes. The natural gastric pacesetter potential (PP) arose in the orad corpus at a mean frequency of 5.0 & 0.1 cycles/min and was propagated aborad. Rectangular electric pulses given 5 times/min generated PP at the cathode of each type of electrode, except in the fundus, and simultaneously suppressed the natural PP. The PP propagating aborad had the same configuration and time of propagation as the natural PP; that propagating orad had a different configuration but the same time. The frequency of the generated PP could be increased to 8.0 or decreased to 4.2 cycles/min by changing the frequency of the stimulus. When electric stimulation was stopped, the natural PP reappeared after one to four natural periods. Gastric instillation of 500 ml of water at 37 C reduced the mean frequency of the PP from 4.9 to 4.1 cycles/min within 5 min, but did not affect the frequency of response to stimulation at 5.1 pulses/min.

Effects and mechanisms of gastrointestinal electrical stimulation on slow waves: a systematic canine study.

The aims of this study were to determine optimal pacing parameters of electrical stimulation on different gut segments and to investigate effects and possible mechanisms of gastrointestinal electrical stimulation on gut slow waves. Twelve female hound-mix dogs were used in this study. A total of six pairs of electrodes were implanted on the stomach, duodenum, and ascending colon. Bilateral trun...

Vectorcardiography as a tool for easy optimization of cardiac resynchronization therapy in canine left bundle branch block hearts.

BACKGROUND In cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT), optimization of left ventricular (LV) stimulation timing is often time consuming. We hypothesized that the QRS vector in the vectorcardiogram (VCG) reflects electric interventricular dyssynchrony, and that the QRS vector amplitude (VAQRS), halfway between that during left bundle branch block (LBBB) and LV pacing, reflects optimal resynchron...

Acute and chronic performance evaluation of a novel epicardial pacing lead placed by percutaneous subxiphoid approach in a canine model.

BACKGROUND Endovascularly implanted leads risk vascular injury and endocarditis, and can be difficult to locate in desired positions for LV pacing. We evaluated the acute and long-term stability, electric performance and histopathology of a percutaneously placed intrapericardial lead (IPL). METHODS AND RESULTS Twelve adult mongrel dogs underwent defibrillator implants incorporating IPLs. Succ...

Effect of Intra-Canal Direct Current Electric Stimulation on Orthodontic Tooth Movement: An Experimental Study in Canines

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to evaluate whether intra-canal application of controlled direct electric current (DEC) could accelerate the amount of orthodontic tooth movement (OTM) in young adult mixed breed dogs. Methods: Fourth premolars of both jaws of five young adult mixed breed dogs were divided into two groups of control and experimental groups. Orthodontic force...

The effect of gastric electrical stimulation on canine gastric slow waves.

This study determined the most efficient parameters of low-frequency/long-pulse gastric electrical stimulation (GES) required to entrain gastric slow waves and also evaluated the effect of entrainment and high-frequency, short-pulse GES on gastric electrical activity (GEA). Nine dogs were fitted with stimulation wires along the greater curvature. Entrainment was observed in six or seven animals...
